Why Should I Reuse My Old Digital Telephones over a New VoIP Telephone System?
Why Should I Reuse My Old Digital Telephones over a New VoIP Telephone System?
So you decide to buy a brand new telephone system, just a few things are stopping you moving forward from "pulling the trigger," as they say. Typical reasons are cost, dislike of change and training users about the new system, or even an antiquated network that could not be ready for VoIP which means you are not sure how to proceed. Well, a fairly easy answer to this can be reusing your old digital telephones with a new VoIP platform! Disclaimer!! This is only feasible when you are upgrading towards the same manufacturer, or to the company that purchased your defunct manufacturer. Common types of this are:
1. Nortel/ Meridian/ Bell South= AVAYA
2. Intertel= Mitel
3. Comdial= Vertical
4. Vodavi= Vertical
5. Siemens= Unify
There are, of course, limitations plus some old software levels that wont allow reuse on new systems, but usually the above manufacturers brought the legacy equipment together with them.
The overriding causes of reuse are cost benefits and old data networks that usually are not ready for voice. Savings can be significant. The average new telephone costs about $200, if you decide to have 20 telephones, that's an instant savings of $4,000 off of the price of brand new. And if your network is at a state where your computers already are slow and having issues, it may 't be wise to add another layer of apparatus, namely voice, onto that same data ecosystem.
On one other hand, there are a few drawbacks to presenting old equipment. There could be issues with compatibility involving the old phones along with the new CPU. We have encounter this before each time a customer had about 100 old Nortel Meridian phones and so they used them on the new AVAYA IP Office. Most of the old sets worked fine, but around 10% ones were too old and wouldn't migrate. Unfortunately, it is very difficult to tell which ones will not act as they are physically identical. But still, the buyer saved tremendous amount by using the old telephones.
Another very common condition is a perception by investing in everything new, we have to get extra features, right? The answer is a firm, kind of! Because the old sets are working around the new, that means they are going to function fundamentally the same, this may be good for users who don't want to learn anything new. On another hand, some features such as visual voice mail, certain notification options, speed dials, etc may not work. Those often require new desktop instruments.
Finally, regarding upgrading a network to deal with VoIP, this is something you will have to do eventually, reusing your old telephones just delays the inevitable. However, that's perfectly acceptable. Maybe the tactic is to pick the bones of a brand new system now, and after that incrementally change out telephones while they die or new staff is hired. Many of our customers take this route, and that we are happy to do business with them.
In the conclusion, your decision is yours if you should reuse or chuck everything for new. Most reputable telecom vendors are able to offer you options.
