Residents Can Sign Up for Emergency Alerts Via Text Message and VoIP - Los Angeles Events
Many people do not have landline telephones any longer, but depend on cell phones and Internet phones, generally known as Voiceover Internet Protocol (VoIP). As a result, they're not on the Telephone Emergency Notification System (TENS) list for emergency alerts when it comes to evacuations and disasters. Now San Bernardino residents can register to receive alerts on their cell phones or VoIP. As an outcome, now the County's emergency notification system allows public safety personnel to succeed in more residents than ever before during disasters.
The Telephone Emergency Notification System (TENS) uses listed and unlisted numbers within the region's 911 database to alert residents of life-threatening emergencies and San Bernardino County updates this database every six months. TENS can be a proven success, and contains placed tens of thousands of calls during wildfire and flood events since its creation in 2004. However, the 9-1-1 database only includes landline telephones, so other numbers has to be registered. If a resident needs to receive an emergency alert text message on the cell phone or perhaps an emergency call on their own Voiceover Internet Protocol (VoIP) phone they should register the number within the system.
TENS is just used in potentially life-threatening incidents including an evacuation within a wildfire or earthquake. When the County deems it necessary to activate TENS, it is going to call the numbers within the 9-1-1 landline database inside affected area, and another separate alert may also go out via message to the mobile phones of those residents who may have signed up for these alerts. In addition, a call will even be placed to any VoIP numbers that were registered. The TENS product is currently TTY and TDD capable, however, residents who begin using these devices are encouraged to enter their numbers using this new feature so your County can ensure they obtain a message right for their device.
